The upper Mississippi
Today‘s ride started in the rain which was a welcomed relief from the blistering sun. Although another 90 mile day, it was not as difficult as I had anticipated. We had periods of headwinds and 3,000 feet of climbing but we also had tailwinds and very rewarding downhills after the long climbs. I never imagined Iowa was so hilly but we’re in the Bluffs of Iowa and Wisconsin which border both sides of the Mississippi River. The upper Mississippi is very expansive and quite impressive. After the second rest stop we entered Wisconsin and rode along the river on a newly paved highway. We flew into LaCrosse averaging 17 mph for the last 26 miles.
I have 8 days of riding left and I believe I see the finish line. I also feel like I’m getting another cold. I guess I’ll know by the end of this day. I really don’t want to limp into Fargo. I do believe I’ve lost a lot of strength due to weight loss. I can’t wait to get home and enjoy some healthier meals with Cindy. Can the “Old Boxer” finish the 10th round? We’ll see.
