After the big storm and things quieted down we had a restful nights rest before our 100 miles on the Beautiful Paul Bunyan Trail. It was a beautiful cool morning and the first 50 miles flew by. The trail wasn’t crowded as we rolled through woodlands that occasionally opened up to a view of a pristine lake. It was an out and back ride. Our turn around point was the city of Bemidji on Lake Bemidji and one of the lakes responsible for the headwaters of the Mississippi River. Bernie was determined to find the two large statues of Paul of Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox in Bemidji. This took awhile but after asking around town we located the two American Folk Heroes. Yippee!
The wind was brisk and we were fortunate to have it to our backs on the return but at mile 70 Bernie had his first flat. He fixed it quickly and we rolled on until mile 95. We were surrounded by the forest and the sun was beginning to set. The minute we stopped the mosquitoes pounced and began to eat us alive. This flat was a major headache and after four different tubes and much frustration, and multiple ideas on what was going astray Bernie was rolling again.
We got back to Akeley and immediately went to the Red River Barbecue where I had a 2 pounds horse burger and a local beer.
Today was a challenging but good day.
